Not your Dad's disco: the origins of dance music

In the beginning... there was the Paradise Garage. Arguably the birth place of what would later become modern dance/DJ culture, the Paradise Garage had the most impressive sound system ever heard.

Their long-time resident DJ, Larry Levan, would spend hours tweaking the levels, and celebrities from Donna Summer to Prince would regularly drop by to hear their latest singles played for the crowds. Levan would often start his sets with 'Macho City', using the claustrophobic groove and sweeping sound effects to build tension and expectation amongst the crowd.
